BRIEF
Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Hospital is one of Europe’s leading pediatric centers, with a proven track record in patient care, research, and teaching in maternal and child medicine. A key part of its work is supporting families as they navigate the day-to-day challenges of complex pediatric illnesses, helping them understand what is happening to their child, how their treatment works, and why every clinical decision is important.
In this context, the hospital has developed an interactive simulator designed for the families of children with congenital coagulopathies—a tool that translates biomedical complexity into a visual, understandable, and accessible experience.
Congenital coagulopathies—hemophilia A and B, von Willebrand disease, thrombocytopenia, and thrombocytopathies—are complex conditions that affect both boys and girls, and their families need to understand them in order to live safely and with peace of mind. When the diagnosis is made, parents are given precise medical explanations that are often difficult to visualize: invisible processes occurring inside the body, abstract hemostatic mechanisms, and treatments that act on systems the family cannot see.
The solution is an interactive simulator developed as a web app that translates the biomedical complexity of coagulation into a visual, dynamic, and understandable experience. It recreates the coagulation process using an animated platelet system, a dynamic fibrin network, and a functional representation of von Willebrand factor, allowing families to explore their child’s specific pathological scenario, observe the effect of treatments on the hemostatic response, and understand the reasoning behind each therapeutic decision. The interface is integrated via an iframe into the hospital’s digital platforms and is compatible with major browsers and devices, accessible anytime, anywhere.
